Background

Biomimicry is a science that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs to solve human problems. Terrapin Bright Green and The Biomimicry Group (T/BG) partnership combines the leading international biomimicry authority with regional environmental expertise to provide cost-effective and results-oriented technical assistance to NYSERDA programs and industrial partners. Biomimicry, intentionally looking to nature for inspiration, will be used to help usher an entrepreneur from concept to commercialization in a way that is better, faster, cheaper and cleaner.

Project Description

The project will: • Foster the deployment of existing biomimetic products and processes in NYS • Develop educational and organizational tools to accelerate biomimetic R&D • Establish research-based evidence for the cost-effectiveness and energy reduction potential of biomimetic design in order to support this program and validate its continuation • Demonstrate benefits to NYS including measurable energy reductions and/or economic growth via the establishment of new products and companies • Improve existing NYS products and processes by consulting with companies on how to use biomimicry as a sustainable innovation tool • Provide the foundation for long-term benefits such as attracting new industries to NYS and establishing new biomimicry research centers or lines of research
