Panelite is a manufacturer of glazing materials that can be used for interior and exterior applications. One of Panelite's products for exterior applications is an insulated glazing unit with an internal polycarbonate honeycomb. This honeycomb provides several benefits, including privacy, reduced solar heat gain, and improved day lighting. Under laboratory test conditions, this product has been determined to have a solar heat gain coefficient that is 73% lower than a low-e coated insulated glazing unit. In cooling-dominated buildings, or buildings with expansive south and west exposures, Panelite's product could offer significant energy benefits. Panelite and Lighting Research Center have teamed to evaluate field performance of Panelite’s product in three buildings in New York.

Project Description

The Contractor (Lighting Research Center) will demonstrate and evaluate Panelite's insulated glazing unit (Panelite IGUs) at three New York demonstration sites. The Panelite IGU will undergo laboratory testing at the Lighting Research Center. The results of these demonstrations will be disseminated at one New York building conference and one national building conference. The Contractor will publish a DELTA publication describing the product. A marketing plan will be developed to promote the use of its products.


Panelite’s insulated glazing unit is estimated to reduce electricity consumption for cooling by more than 10%. The product also offers the potential to reduce electricity consumption for lighting, reduce direct glare, and therefore make day lighting strategies more effective.
