CFL Downlights/Wallwashers(ST8892-1)

Edison Price Lighting, Inc.

Background

Downlights are the most prevalent lighting fixtures associated with residential construction; More than 20 downlights are typically specified in residential new construction. Significant energy savings are associated with substituting incandescents with CFLs. While compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) have begun to gain market acceptance for residential illumination, there are new construction applications for which few suitable fixtures exist (e.g., IC-rated CFL downlights and wall washers for use in residences with insulated ceilings). Edison Price Lighting (EPL) has recently designed IC-rated quartz incandescent downlights and wallwashers for residential use and intends to build upon this expertise in the development of specification-grade CFL downlights and wallwashers for the residential market, and in commercial applications where insulation is used.

Project Description

The Contractor shall design, prototype, manufacture, and market two families of CFL luminaries suitable for a variety of CLF wattages (13-32 watts). All the design and manufacturing tasks shall take place in the Contractor's Long Island City facility. The Contractor shall coordinate its design and testing activities with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory CFL testing program and shall coordinate its marketing efforts with NYSERDA's Residential Energy Affordability Program.

Benefits

Benefits include energy savings associated with replacing incandescent downlights with fluorescent downlights, and that CFL lamps use 1/3 to ¼ of the energy of standard incandescent A lamps.

Project Results

The Contractor designed, prototyped, manufactured, and marketed two families of CFL luminaries suitable for a variety of CFL wattages (13-32 watts); an(IC)-rated model ("EPIC") and a non IC-rated model ("PRESTO"). All the design and manufacturing tasks were completed in the Contractor's Long Island City facility. The Contractor coordinated its design and testing activities with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory CFL testing program and coordinated its marketing efforts with NYSERDA's Residential Energy Affordability Program. Product manufacturing began mid-2007. The Contractor received the Energy Star label for both the EPIC and PRESTO luminaries.
