Background

State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) has been engaged in the development of biomass feedstock for some time. Bristol Meyers Squib (BMS) generates a stream of residual biosolids that requires expensive disposal. This project will explore ways to combine the BMS waste stream with other biomass in the area to derive a synthetic biogas that could in turn be converted into energy in the form of heat for the BMS facilities and power for the grid.

Project Description

This feasibility study explored a demonstration of gasification in New York State, using indigenous fuels. The gasification system would produce a thermal energy stream and up to five MW of electric capacity and associated energy for resale.

Project Results

Researchers: 1) conducted an economic and engineering feasibility assessment for commercial-scale gasification of woody biomass; 2) explored availability and cost of feedstock, including dedicated energy crops, organic biosolids from the Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) facility, and other biomass feedstock in the region around Syracuse; 3) derived environmental and economic benefits associated with this industrial combined heat and power application fueled by local renewable fuels; 4) conducted preliminary environmental assessments necessary to determine prospects for project permitting; 5) explored gas and electric interconnection issues; electrical generation potential including transmission grid access capability and appropriate layouts; and, 6) explored project costs associated with biomass generation at a selected site in Syracuse, New York.
