Database design testing, verification and implementation support services(16293)

University at Albany

Background

University at Albany (UAlbany) Information Technology Management (ITM) MBA students complete consulting-type field projects in organizations where they face the challenges, dynamics and deadlines they will later experience in their own careers. They work in teams of two – four, with a faculty supervisor, for this year-long project. Participating firms range from Fortune 100 firms to local social service agencies. The client organization provides a project mentor as well as a nurturing environment for the students to grow in their technical, social, and management abilities. This applied educational approach develops the professional skills and abilities most valued in the business world, while providing invaluable business experience for the student.

Project Description

The team of students aided in the development and implementation of the R&D Metrics Database system. The purpose of the database is to build a warehouse of information that can be used for impact assessment as well as a tool for managing progress of research projects. The database will eventually be used as a central storage location for all metrics related to R&D projects.

Benefits

The foremost benefit derived from this activity will be the database’s ability to quickly and accurately report out detailed metrics regarding the efforts of R&D projects and will be used to determine the impact on the New York State economy.

Project Results

The UAlbany field project team of MBA Information Technology Management (ITM) students has finished their work. Throughout the course of the year the students developed an implementation plan & schedule; wrote reporting specifications; developed an RPU template & technical specifications; aided in testing & updating documentation; wrote a user manual & data dictionary; and aided in the development of metrics collection forms.
