Development of EnergyPlus IEQ Software Program:Development of a Multizone Energy/Indoor(ST7044A-1)

Performance Systems Development, Inc.

Background

The use of computer analysis tools for designing buildings has increased. The most respected analysis tool used for the energy design of buildings is DOE 2.1, developed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The DOE has begun developing a new analysis tool to replace DOE 2.1. The initial version of this program, called EnergyPlus, has been released. The DOE is seeking private partners to commercialize this product by adding a graphical user interface and output reports. Performance Systems Development (PSD) believes a market exists for a version of EnergyPlus that could calculate the relationships between energy-efficiency and indoor environmental quality (IEQ). PSD proposes calling this software product "EnergyPlus-IEQ."

Project Description

PSD will develop the flow charts and algorithms for the software, complete the coding for the IEQ portion of the program, develop the software capabilities to compare a building's design with indoor air-quality guidelines, test the energy-calculation algorithms of the software according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s BESTEST protocol, beta-test the software with 50 design professionals and commercialize the software.

Benefits

Buildings use significantly less energy when they are designed with software tools, such as DOE2.1 or EnergyPlus. This project proposes to develop a new product that will be produced and sold in New York State. If this software is commercialized, new technical jobs (programmers, production house staff, consultants) will be created in New York.
