The environmental remediation of industrial sites contaminated with various pollutants is a widespread problem of growing importance. Numerous technical approaches exist to achieve the clean-up of such sites through existing approaches such as excavation and either thermal destruction or land-filling. Both are costly and result in secondary pollution. In-situ technologies such as bioremediation and soil vapor extraction have the potential of playing a major role in site clean-up. The speed, effectiveness, and ultimate cost of in-situ systems can be improved using thermal enhancement. Donald Geisel & Associates has developed an innovative approach to enhance bioremediation through soil warming. The system uses patented heat exchangers in a closed-loop circulation system to add heat and oxygen to the contaminated area.

Project Description

The HeatTrode system will be installed in situ at the Schenectady International Incorporated site and operated for a minimum of 10 months. The Contractor will assemble a package system with complete controls for ultimate commercialization. Initially, the HeatTrode system will be operated in a vapor extraction mode. This system will be compared with a conventional soil vapor extraction system using warm air to thermally accelerate extraction. Depending on soil contamination levels after a period of soil vapor extraction, a decision to switch to bioventing or continuing thermally accelerated soil vapor extraction will be made. At the end of the 10-month field program, the performance of the system will be documented.


Commercialization of a remediation system, will reduce energy use and environmental impacts at a brownfield site.

Project Results

A final report documenting work at Schenectady International was received. To date, the HeatTrode system has not been deployed commercially.
