Research Project Summary Information

Higher Speed Toll Collection(ST6098-1)

NYS Thruway Authority

The New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) has implemented EZPass throughout the length of the Thruway, and it has resulted in reduced delays and congestion at crowded toll plazas. Nevertheless, there is still a need for improvement in some areas, particularly downstate. NYSTA personnel have investigated using off-the-shelf hardware to support higher-speed toll collection at the plazas, and potentially, highway-speed toll collection. Although some of the products have been tested at higher speeds, additional product testing needs to be accomplished, and systems integration needs to occur.

Project Description

Hardware and software will be purchased and installed at toll stations to evaluate performance for higher speed applications. An analysis of the benefits will be performed.

Higher speed toll collection could further reduce congestion at toll plazas, and provide the energy and environmental benefits related to reduced or eliminated idle time for vehicles.

Project Results

A significant requirement of the program was the ability to identify vehicles that did not have an EZPass transponder. Consequently, a major portion of the research was focused on advancing license plate recognition technology, and significant progress was made.
