Background

Data loggers are used to verify building systems' functionality for energy efficiency studies, retrofit programs, and commissioning; as well as for computer building models. Commercially available data loggers have been either too expensive and difficult to use, or inexpensive with unacceptable accuracies. A NYSERDA-sponsored market study identified the need for a portable, easy to use, battery operated unit.

Tasks include design planning, hardware and software design, prototype manufacturing, field-testing, and product commercialization.

Benefits

This product will fill a market niche by providing a cost-effective means for identifying problem energy-usage situations and verifying solutions that have been implemented. This product will create substantial growth for the contractor, a small start-up company, as well as for ESCOs; and will add to the New York State manufacturing base.

Project Results

A first generation handheld logger was built and tested in the field. Several adjustments were required due to circuit board errors. The subsequent design was developed and built, but was not cost competitive with similar products on the market. The product was abandoned by the Contractor and the project has subsequently been terminated.
