Electrical Power WorX Corporation


The Contractor, Electrical Power worX (EPX) is a relatively new company composed of railway engineering professionals with experience in a broad array of transit rail disciplines. The principals are focusing their initial business on the development of electrical energy storage systems for more effective use of regenerative braking energy in electrified rail systems. Currently, they are in the early stages of development of an ultra capacitor-based trackside energy storage system for application within the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), and ultimate commercialization worldwide. This current initiative is funded under NYSERDA project #10388. EPX has also recognized that there are alternate configurations of energy storage technologies that may be better applied to certain electrified rail applications, namely storage systems that are incorporated on the railcar, rather than installed trackside. EPX is leveraging the initial study tasks of its wayside energy storage project to initiate this new feasibility study of using ultra capacitors for on-railcar storage.

Project Description

The scope of work for the study includes the following elements of the on-railcar storage systems, for comparison to the Contractor’s trackside system studies: sizing and efficiency; power circuit requirements; control system requirements; mechanical requirements, safety implications; and maintenance impacts.

Project Results

EPX successfully completed the study project and delivered an acceptable final report. Based on a subsequent competitive proposal, EPX was awarded a project to prepare a more detailed design of an on-car ultra capacitor-based energy storage system for a typical MTA railcar.
