NY State Virtual Wind Contest with Web-based Educational Wind Tool(ST10979-1)

New West Technologies, LLC.

Background

Awareness of the available wind potential and the benefits of wind is a barrier to expanding wind power generation in New York and many other parts of the US. It is less feasible to put turbines at schools across New York in the same way that photovoltaic (PV) cells were installed through the School Power...Naturally program, so New West Technologies, LLC proposes to educate students by using software designed to simulate real world situations.

Project Description

Specific objectives include: 1) review educational materials and design guidelines for the wind contest; 2) collect New York State wind data; 3) design and distribute educational wind tool software; and, 4) promote, coordinate, and implement contest.

Benefits

Students will use the software to learn what sort of planning is needed for a wind turbine installation, including choosing an appropriate site based on wind data and selecting appropriate turbine technology. Using the programs, students can gain a practical understanding of how wind energy contributes to our energy supply now, and how it may contribute in the future.

Project Results

In total, there were 23 interested teachers and 13 registered classes for the contest. The project met its overall objective to create educational software and present it in a contest where students compete to design the most efficient and economical wind turbine installation. Preliminary and post-contest quizzes were developed to evaluate the knowledge gained by the students. Results showed improved understanding of wind energy basics and the key learning components through their involvement in this activity. Though the contest is over, the software is still available on NYSERDA’s website for teachers to use.
