Background

Clarkson is currently designing a new Technology Advancement Center (TAC) which will link its Educational Resources Center and Science Center. Clarkson is seeking LEED certification for this new building which will incorporate green building features and sustainable materials. As part of this effort, Clarkson has proposed the installation of a microturbine based combined cooling, heating and power system. Clarkson is working with the County Emergency Management Office to classify the new building as a facility of public refuge.

Project Description

As part of the construction of the new TAC, Clarkson will install a UTC Power 195 kW PureComfort system. This microturbine based system will be integrated into the power, cooling and heating systems of the new TAC building and the two existing adjacent buildings.

Benefits

Initially, critical loads in the TAC will be supported by the microturbine system with a flicker free transition between grid parallel and grid independent operation. The system will be installed to be visible and accessible to students. Future plans include relocating the Clarkson’s network and telecommunication center to the basement of an adjacent building. Power for this new communication facility will be supplied by the microturbine system. Electric production is projected to be over 1.1 GWhr/yr at an overall thermal efficiency of just under 69%.
