Price Chopper Fuel Cell Demonstration(ST10799-1)

Golub is currently constructing a replacement Price Chopper next to its current store in Colonie, NY. Golub is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for this new facility, which will become a showcase for energy efficiency for the supermarket sector. As part of this effort, an integrated combined cooling, heating and power system has been proposed using a UTC PureCell 400 fuel cell unit. The PureCell 400 is a new design that has not yet been field demonstrated and is not ANSI certified or commercially available. The PureCell 400 promises to have lower capital and maintenance costs and a significantly longer stack life compared to UTC’s previously available fuel cell systems.

Project Description

A UTC Power Corporation PureCell 400 combined cooling, heating and power fuel cell unit will be installed and integrated into the new supermarket to be constructed in Colonie, NY. Critical loads will be connected to the fuel cell behind the grid disconnect switch. A short-term (5-10 second) uninterruptible power supply will provide flicker free power to critical loads during the transition from grid parallel to grid independent operation.


The system will be configured to provide flicker free transition from grid parallel to grid isolated operation during grid outages. The system will be used to provide 400kW base load power to the facility. In addition, the system will produce chilled water for various uses throughout the facility, and will produce hot water which will be used for space heating, domestic hot water production and desiccant regeneration. Golub is planning on making the system viewable to the public with informational displays. The system is projected to produce over 2.4GWhr/yr with an overall thermal efficiency of over 78%.
