Research Project Summary Information

The Visionaire Water Treatment and Recycling System (ST10624-1)

Alliance Environmental, LLC

Water reuse systems have been installed at several high-rise residential apartment buildings in New York City. Data collected from these sites indicates a 48% reduction in water consumption and a 60% reduction in wastewater discharge by comparison to a base New York City residential building as defined by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection. While these results are very positive, more work is needed to optimize water reuse systems with respect to energy consumption. The Visionaire is a new residential high-rise under construction at Battery Park City (expected completion late 2008) that will have a water reuse system (a black water treatment system). This site is interested in collecting and analyzing performance data to determine the water reuse system's performance, specifically in regard to energy consumption and the reuse of water in cooling towers.

Project Description

The Contractor (Alliance Environmental) shall measure the energy consumption and economic costs of operating a water reuse system and shall compare these measurements to a base building that does not include water reuse. A monitoring system to measure the water reuse system’s performance shall be designed, installed and commissioned at Visionaire. Performance data shall be collected for one year. The collected data shall be evaluated to identify opportunities for improving the water reuse system and cooling tower operation. The energy implication of reusing treated water in the cooling tower shall be determined. The quantities of chemicals used in the cooling tower shall be monitored to determine any changes in maintenance requirements.

It is roughly estimated that the water reuse system could reduce water usage at Visionaire by as much as 10,000 gallons per day. The system could also reduce waste water discharge from Visionaire by as much as 20,000 gallons per day.
