Low Temperature Process for Silicon Carbide Wear Shapes (ST10464-1)

Background

Silicon Carbide Products, Inc. (SCP) manufactures silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide specialty shapes for use in the wear, refractory, and foundry industries. Changes in the market have created an opportunity for high performance wear- resistant components, especially large shapes such as cones and other hydrocyclone parts.

Project Description

The project will develop a silicon carbide material with a proprietary bond phase that is created at relatively low temperatures of approximately 1500o F as compared to competitive materials requiring temperatures as high as 3100o F. This innovative process will provide a highly wear- resistant material at significantly lower processing temperatures, and use considerably less expensive equipment than competing technologies. It will be necessary to develop a formulation of silicon carbide with certain processing aids and a reactive source of oxygen. Energy savings will result from the significant reduction in processing temperatures.

Benefits

There is potential for annual savings of 4,210,000 kWh with full implementation of this process, which is equivalent to 6,525,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide gas emissions. There would be capital equipment savings of $6,000,000. Additional benefits include increased employment (10 - 15 jobs within five years), sales, taxes, royalties, and the associated purchases within New York State.
