Background

New York State is a major consumer of fuel oil for heating. Nearly three million households (about forty percent of the population) and numerous businesses in New York State use almost 2 billion gallons of fuel oil per year for heating. New York State fuel oil customers also represent 25% of the oil heat market in the United States. Improved oil-fired heating technologies offer the potential for significant energy, environmental, and economic savings. Biodiesel is a name applied to liquid fuels derived from vegetable (e.g., soybean or canola) oils or recycled cooking oils.

Project Description

Field testing will be conducted to identify and resolve equipment and cold weather problems, such as difficult ignition, gasket and seal deterioration, and cold temperature clouding and waxing. The testing will also seek to evaluate the expected benefits of biodiesel, including higher flash point and reductions in nozzle varnishing, heat exchanger fouling, and pollutant emissions.

Project Results

322k gallons of B20 were sold to 282 customers. There were no operational issues with the B20, but it was found the above ground storage tanks were incompatible. The Contractor was splash blending the biodiesel, which is not appropriate for mass distribution. Contractor stated that blending must take place at the rack and the biodiesel storage tanks must be heated.
