Demonstration of a Solar Combisystem at BNL officer club(ST10213-1)

Brookhaven National Lab

Background

Combisystems have been developing in Europe since the 1980s. The systems typically include condensing boilers, stratified storage tanks, solar collectors and radiant floor distribution. These systems have larger collector areas than conventional solar water heaters. In Europe, 50% fuel use reductions have been reported for homes that replace existing boiler systems with combisystems. Rotex of Germany is one manufacturer of combisystems. Rotex and BNL have entered into discussions to test such a system in New York

Project Description

BNL will install a combisystem at the Brookhaven Center, a 14,000 sq ft recreational facility. The system shall be commissioned to ensure proper operation, and the system’s performance shall be monitored for one year. BNL will prepare technical articles for publication in engineering periodicals.

Benefits

The system is projected to reduce fuel oil usage at the Brookhaven Center by 1,209 gallons annually. This project would provide New York performance data for a very innovative solar thermal system that is gaining popularity in Europe.
