Riverside Laundromat Thermal Heating(ST10211-1)

Background

The Riverside Laundromat-Carwash operates in an 18,000 sq ft building. It uses more than 5,500 gallons of propane annually to heat water for the washing machines, carwash bays, and an office area. This facility has several characteristics that make it a good candidate for a solar domestic water heating system. The facility has a substantial thermal load throughout the year, and the facility has an unshaded south facing roof. Space heating is provided through a radiant floor system. The facility structure and design also provide adequate space for installing the storage tank and piping.

Project Description

Earth Environmental Group (the Contractor) shall design and install flat plate collectors and a storage tank to provide heated water to this facility. The performance of the system shall be monitored for one year. This project's results shall be disseminated through technical articles, presentations to professional societies, and the Internet.

Benefits

The solar thermal systems will save more than $2,900 annually in propane expenses. The payback for these systems is estimated to be 10 years without tax credits or NYSERDA’s support.
