Golub Headquarters Bldg CHP Demo Project(STD11183)

Price Chopper / Golub Corporation

Background

Golub Corp is planning to construct a new six-story, 240,000 square foot, high-performance office building in Schenectady, NY. LEED Platinum certification is currently being targeted. The planned use of the building is typical office work with weekday operating hours of 7 AM to 7 PM and a typical occupancy of 700-800 people. Energy modeling has projected a peak electric load of 850 kW, a peak cooling load of 400 tons, and a peak thermal load of 5MMBtu of natural gas. Total annual energy consumption is projected to be 2,500MWhr of electricity and 22,260MMBtu of natural gas.

Project Description

A UTC Power PC200M 200 kW microturbine-based CHP system with integrated heating and cooling will be integrated into the design of this new building. The PC200M is a new product for UTC Power, and this will be the first installation of this design. The system incorporates a single 200 kW Capstone microturbine and a double-effect absorption chiller. The Capstone 200 kW microturbine is also a new design that was developed as a joint effort with UTC Power.

Benefits

This is a demonstration of a new pre-packaged, microturbine-based CHP system design providing both heat and cold along with electricity. The CHP system is expected to provide over 1,500 MWhr of electricity per year, along with 3,470 MMBtu of cooling and 3,250 MMBtu heating per year. The CHP system will be configured to provide a flickerfree transition from grid parallel to grid independent operation for priority loads.
