Integrated Energy System Using Anaerobic Digester Gas(ST9921-1)

Background

The City of Schenectady Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) currently has two 450,000 gallon digesters used to digest approximately 3,000 dry tons of sludge per year. It is estimated that the digesters produce 1 MMBtu /hr of anaerobic digester gas (ADG). Some of this gas is used to keep the digesters at 95 F, and the rest is flared. The site has a peak demand of 873 kW, an average demand of 578 kW, and an annual consumption of over 5,000 MWhrs.

Project Description

A CHP system consisting of two 150 kW reciprocating engine generator-sets, a heat recovery system, gas cleanup system, and an integrated sludge thickening system will be installed and integrated with the digester heating system. The installation of the sludge thickening system will increase the effectiveness of the digesters and result in an increase in ADG produced. The digesters will also be reconditioned and new covers will be installed.

Benefits

The new CHP system will provide approximately 50% of the site’s annual electric consumption, and will improve the effectiveness of the digesters. Energy cost savings for the site have been estimated to be over $250,000/yr. The CHP system will be configured to provide emergency power in the event of a power outage.
