Sustainable Urban CEA(ST11113-1)

Gotham Greens Farms, LLC

New York City comprises the largest part of the demand for imported fresh fruits and vegetables to the state, a commercial sector worth more than $1 billion. There is a significant market potential for locally grown produce, as well as the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse heating loads by locating the hydroponic growing facility on building roofs in New York City.

Project Description

Gotham Greens Farms, LLC designed, constructed, and operates a 15,000 square foot hydroponic, urban Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) facility on the roof of an industrial building in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The facility produces over 100 tons of lettuce, salad greens and culinary herbs annually. This is a state-of-the-art climate-controlled greenhouse built using innovative energy-efficient materials and design. The facility is supported by an on-site solar photovoltaic system (70,000 kWh annually). Unlike traditional greenhouses built on concrete slabs, additional energy savings are realized by eliminating heat losses through the building roof and the greenhouse floor. Irrigation water for the hydroponic system is re-circulated, saving significantly more water than conventional agriculture.

Gotham Greens provides premium quality, locally produced, pesticide-free crops grown in a facility designed to be energy and resource efficient. Crops are often delivered to local customers the same day they are harvested, providing fresh produce and limiting transportation costs and emissions compared with imported produce. The project demonstrates the successful application of urban rooftop agriculture and has created 25 green jobs in New York City.

Project Results

Climate, equipment performance, energy use and crop data will be collected throughout the year with the goal of continuously improving energy performance and crop yield. Metrics related to energy use and savings, CO2 emissions/lb of product and crop production will be calculated after the first year of operation and used as a benchmark for additional performance improvements.
