Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery Power for Trackside Energy Storage(ST11043-1)

Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc.

Background

Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc. is one of the major manufacturers of rail cars supplied to the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). This unit of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. Has been in operation since 1986, and has a major (230,000 sq. ft.) manufacturing facility in Yonkers, NY. Kawasaki has developed a trackside electrical energy storage system, based on their nickel metal hydride, “Gigacell Battery” technology. The storage system, called their Battery Power System (BPS) is being aimed at application to electrified rail transit systems worldwide, to maximize the recovery of regenerative braking energy and providing third rail voltage support. Kawasaki has had a demonstration of the system in Japan, and would like their first point of entry into the U.S. market for this system to be at NYC Transit, which is the largest subway system in North America. Penetration into NYCT, other agencies of the MTA, or other U.S. transit systems will depend first on a successful demonstration of the system in an actual rail transit application at one of NYCT’s subway stations, namely their Far Rockaway test track.

Project Description

The objective was to demonstrate the Kawasaki Battery Power System (BPS) at NYCT for maximizing the recovery of regenerative braking energy and providing third rail voltage support. This is a demonstration of Kawasaki's Gigacell battery, that has been commercially used in Japan but not yet used or demonstrated in the U.S. for wayside storage.

Benefits

An effective and affordable trackside energy storage system that can be successfully demonstrated and deployed within the MTA can have substantial energy savings impacts on the annual 2 billion kwhr traction power usage of the NYC MTA. Also, Kawasaki has indicated that successful entry into the U.S. market will allow them to establish the BPS manufacturing line in the Yonkers, NY facility, yielding additional NYS jobs.

Project Results

The project successfully demonstrated the Kawasaki Gigacell Battery Power System at NYCT for maximizing the recovery of regenerative braking energy and providing third rail voltage support. The technical performance of the system went so well that NYCT relocated the system to a key midtown Manhattan station (53rd St) for extended testing. NYCT is also now considering purchase of similar systems for their subway operations.
