Many New York small- to medium-sized manufacturing firms focus on product quality, supply chain strategies and operational strategies to remain competitive. With the increase in energy cost, firms are looking for ways to reduce energy demand. New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYS P2I) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) seeks to apply Lean, Energy and Environment (LE2) methods to the NYS manufacturing sector. LE2 is a unique, comprehensive, and balanced approach that examines manufacturer productivity, process efficiency, and energy and environmental impacts to uncover technologies that could be implemented to achieve energy benefits and economic benefits. Service firms conduct energy audits, environmental audits and lean audits individually. but few integrate the three components together.

Project Description

The project will demonstrate and implement underutilized and innovative Lean Energy and Environment (LE2) techniques within the NYS industrial sector. Preliminary information will be collected and evaluated to determine potential productivity improvements, along with reduction in energy use and emissions, with annual cost savings estimated. After the data is reviewed by management additional detailed information is collected to create a Value Stream Map with productivity, energy, and environmental metrics calculated. The project will involve performing 15 - 20 LE2 assessments on NYS manufacturers, and selecting three to five manufacturers to assist with implementing recommended innovative technologies. Market transition will be advanced by partnering with the State’s ten Regional Technology Development Corporations.
