Current designs for “clean” power plants are dominated by integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) and oxyfuel combustion. Both technologies have been developed for other purposes, however, and are not truly optimized for zero-emission plants. A range of potential designs is possible with re-combinations and modifications of existing design components. Such hybrid designs are likely to outperform the first-generation designs currently under consideration. Development of a specialized modeling tool will aid in selecting and developing these new plant designs.

Project Description

1) Establish the performance criteria, identify key parameters, and create computational models for each module through a literature review and test run of existing component models using ASPEN software; 2) develop computational capability and databases to model various power plant designs, establish different plant process configurations, create heat and mass balances for various plant designs, develop cost estimates, and assess the designs based on efficiency and technical and economic feasibility; and 3) develop a roadmap of options and disseminate the results among energy industry and policy officials.


The project would open new pathways to develop zero-emission power plant designs, allowing NYS to continue to rely on fossil fuels for base load electricity generation while remaining in line with likely greenhouse gas regulations. Design of power plants with no smoke stacks will permanently solve the issue of increasingly stringent emissions regulations and have a significant reduction in negative environmental impact.
