Background

Richardson Brands Company (RBC), a candy and condiment manufacturer located in Canajoharie, NY, used to purchase steam from the neighboring Beech-Nut plant located approximately ¼ mile away. Beech-Nut relocated its operations, closed the Canajoharie plant, and shut down Richardson’s steam supply in 2009. Given the steam shut-down, RBC needed an alternative to sustain production and employment levels.

Project Description

The project objective was to carry out a field demonstration of an innovative fire-tube steam boiler with advanced heat recovery system (AHRS) at Richardson Brands Company, and to validate performance targets of 90%+ fuel-to-steam efficiency with less than nine parts per million volume (ppm) NOx emissions firing natural gas.

This technology allows Richardson Brands to remain in Canajoharie, retaining jobs and creating more employment opportunities, and reduces fresh water needs and natural gas use.

Project Results

Based on testing at RBC and other sites, the Transport Membrane Condenser (TMC) technology and AHRS equipment have shown the ability to significantly increase boiler energy efficiency by 13-15%, or more. The calculated efficiency for the boiler and AHRS was 92.3%. The system also enables recovery of clean water from the boiler’s natural gas exhaust stream. This helps off-set the need for more fresh water supply and water treatment, and avoids a corrosive condensate that is generally created with condensing natural gas equipment heat recovery equipment. Annual savings from water and gas reductions were observed to be $1,800 and $62,800, respectively. It is estimated that 35 jobs were retained or created. The AHRS product tested at RBC is now commercially available from Cannon Boiler Works, under the brand name Ultramizer®. This technology can be used for low-temperature waste heat and water recovery from larger commercial and industrial boilers and other commercial and industrial process applications.
