High-Voltage Equipment Design Tool

Background

In all but the smallest power plants, generators produce electric power between 13.8 and 28 kV. It is then "stepped up" with a generator step-up transformer (GSU) to transmission voltages ranging from 69 kV to 765 kV. Estimates are that the GSU contributes as much as 0.5% to 2% of the overall generating plant efficiency losses. These losses can be eliminated with generators designed to operate at transmission voltages. In order to design such high-voltage generators, a design tool is required to calculate and predict electric and magnetic fields inside the complicated generator geometry.

Objective

The project objective is to develop a computer software package that will enable the calculation of high-voltage electric and magnetic fields in equipment with complex geometries.

Description

SkyBlue Research will work together in developing a three-dimensional electromagnetic analysis software for designing high-voltage generators and other electrical equipment. The analysis software will enable designers to ensure that electric fields remain below critical levels in coil insulation and the surrounding space. The software will analyze fields in three dimensions in the presence of materials with non-linear electrical properties or complex geometries. The analysis will account for resistive, capacitive, and inductive effects.

Benefits

High-voltage generators can improve electric generation efficiency by an estimated 0.5 - 2%, with a concomitant reduction in emissions. The availability of this high voltage design tool will help electrical equipment manufacturers design generators that are competitive on the world market, and retain jobs in New York State. High-voltage generators will reduce the cost of electricity to consumers.

Schedule and Benefits

In addition to the kick-off meeting, the contractor held several meetings with a potential manufacturer to determine specific equipment design requirements needed to develop the analysis tool computer code.
