Financial Support for Training, Certification and Accreditation

NYSERDA has supported individuals, participating contractors and partners with reimbursement for costs associated with training, certifications and company accreditations. This support will continue through the Workforce Development Program under PON 2397 at the levels indicated below.

Training Programs

NYSERDA is developing new training initiatives to routinely offer across the state, in various technology areas, for all sectors. NYSERDA funding is provided to significantly reduce the upfront costs of training for participants.

Energy Efficiency Certifications

Eligible individuals who achieve certifications from the Building Performance Institute (BPI), Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), International Facility Management Association (IFMA), American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Northwest Energy Efficiency Council Building Operator Certification (BOC), National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP), North American Technician Excellence (NATE), and other certifications relevant to energy efficiency skills and competencies necessary to support New York State Clean Energy programs may qualify to receive 50% reimbursement, capped at $600 per certification and $6,000 per individual, for those costs associated with certification and recertification examination fees and application fees. NYSERDA counts toward the cap any certification reimbursement received by an individual starting January 1, 2012. To facilitate reimbursement processing, certified individuals are required to submit the PON 2397 Individual Certifications: PV, ST, Energy Efficiency - Attachment C [PDF] along with additional supporting documentation as outlined on the Form.

Energy Efficiency Company Accreditation

Currently, the only available accreditation for energy efficiency companies is that offered by BPI. Eligible companies who acquire BPI Accreditation or Re-Accreditation may qualify to receive 50% reimbursement, capped at $1,800 annually, of their accreditation/reaccreditation costs. To facilitate reimbursement processing, companies are required to submit the PON 2397 Company Accreditation and Accreditation Renewals: PV and Energy Efficiency - Attachment B [PDF] along with additional supporting documentation as outlined on the Form. If and when additional national and independent company accreditations (energy efficiency) become available, they may be eligible for financial support as long as they are consistent with clean energy program goals.

NABCEP PV Company Accreditation

Eligible companies who apply for and achieve the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners’ (NABCEP) PV Company Accreditation may qualify to receive 100% reimbursement for costs associated with the accreditation application, up to $1,800. To determine eligibility, refer to PON 2397 Summary [PDF]. To facilitate incentive processing, companies must submit the PON 2397 Company Accreditation and Accreditation Renewals: PV and Energy Efficiency - Attachment B [PDF] along with additional supporting documentation as outlined on the Form.

PV and Solar Thermal NABCEP Installer Certification

Eligible installers who achieve NABCEP certification or are designated as an IBEW journeymen electrician with the required PV training courses may qualify to receive reimbursement up to $1000 for achieving certifications. To determine eligibility, refer to PON 2397 Summary [PDF]. To facilitate incentive processing, installers must submit the PON 2397 Individual Certifications: PV, ST, Energy Efficiency - Attachment C [PDF] along with additional supporting documentation as outlined on the Form.

IREC ISPQ Training Program Accreditation

Eligible applicants who achieve the Interstate Renewable Energy Council’s (IREC) Institute for Sustainable Power Quality (ISPQ) accreditation may qualify to receive reimbursement for up to 80% of the total costs associated with the IREC ISPQ application as outlined in PON 2397 [PDF], up to a maximum of $5,000, per applicant. To facilitate incentive processing, applicants must submit the PON 2397 Attachment A - IREC ISPQ Program Accreditation of Training Programs [PDF] along with additional supporting documentation as outlined on the Form.
