New York State’s Climate Act is among the most ambitious of climate laws in the nation and has spurred significant climate action and efforts to secure a just and equitable transition to a clean energy economy. It includes:

  • a reduction in economywide greenhouse gas emissions of 40% by 2030 and 85% by 2050, from 1990 levels
  • 70% renewable energy by 2030
  • 100% clean power by 2040
  • and much more

With a focus on achieving these goals – now guided by the Scoping Plan Link opens in new window - close new window to return to this page. approved by the Climate Action Council in December 2022 and supported by unprecedented levels of federal and State support – NYSERDA and partner agencies and industries will accelerate the build-out of climate infrastructure and energy solutions already underway. This acceleration will put New York State firmly on a path toward carbon neutrality while ensuring equity, system reliability, and a just transition from a fossil fuel economy to a robust clean energy economy.

NYSERDA will continue to align policy and program offerings that reflect new and significant drivers of change, including the prioritization of the key strategies and policies as outlined in NYSERDA's Strategic Plan, Toward a Clean Energy Future: A Strategic Outlook 2023‒2026 [PDF]. The Plan is organized around NYSERDA's mission outcomes – greenhouse gas emissions reductions, renewable energy, energy efficiency and building decarbonization, the clean energy economy, and a resilient and distributed energy system – and keeps people at the heart of these ongoing efforts.

As this critical inflection point for our climate and energy systems unfolds, NYSERDA will continue to lead, support, and collaborate with its numerous stakeholders and partners across New York State. It will also exhibit the steadfast and focused attention needed to combat the climate crisis in the decades ahead.
