NYSERDA Recognizes Six Engineering Firms for Doubling Energy Efficiency Savings in Multifamily Buildings

Awards Honor Energy Savings Achieved in Existing Multifamily Buildings and New Construction

Multifamily buildings across New York State are maximizing building energy efficiency and reducing energy costs. To honor teams for achieving double or triple the required energy savings—the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has recognized six engineering firms participating in the Multifamily Performance Program (MPP).

Partners in MPP—energy specialists focused on improving multifamily building performance—earned the awards for providing outstanding work on an MPP project. The winning projects maximize energy efficiency to reduce energy consumption, costs and waste in multifamily buildings, while providing a more comfortable, healthy and sustainable environment for residents.

“Congratulations to the winners for leading the industry in New York State to improve energy efficiency in multifamily buildings,” said Tom Barone, acting vice president of Operations and Energy Services, NYSERDA. “As we work together to advance Governor Cuomo’s energy agenda, multifamily buildings provide opportunities to have a major impact on energy use and the environment.”

Energy savings in the multifamily sector complements Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s BuildSmart NY program, an initiative to improve energy efficiency in state buildings to reduce costs and environmental emissions. The target for Build Smart NY is a 20 percent reduction in state energy use intensity over seven years, compared to a 2010/2011 baseline.

NYSERDA has honored energy savings achieved through its MPP program for several years. For 2013, categories were added to recognize customer satisfaction and the highest savings across a partner’s project portfolio. The Deep Savings Award, which recognizes exceptional savings in a single project, was expanded to better reflect energy savings in low-rise versus high-rise buildings.

Winners include:

  • Association for Energy Affordability (AEA) and Power Concepts (both of New York City)
    • Co-winners of the Deep Savings Award for High-Rise Existing Buildings (10+ stories), for the highest actual energy savings. The winning project, at 17-85 215th Street, had a 37 percent energy savings.
  • C.J. Brown Energy P.C. (Buffalo)
    • Deep Savings Award for Low-Rise Existing Buildings (1-9 stories) for the highest actual energy savings achieved. The winning project, at 2730 Main Street, achieved 45 percent energy savings.
    • On-Target Award for Existing Buildings, for the project with the most accurately predicted energy savings. The winning project was Delaware Tower Condominium, where projected vs. actual energy consumption differed by less than one-tenth of 1 percent.
  • En-Power Group (White Plains)
    • Installer Award for Existing Buildings (a new award category for measuring the highest installed savings across an MPP partner’s portfolio). En-Power’s MPP portfolio achieved a savings of 17,646 million BTU.
  • Power Concepts (New York City)
    • Deep Savings Award for High-Rise Existing Buildings (10+ stories) for the highest actual energy savings achieved.  The winning project at Hampton House Condominiums had a 28 percent energy savings.
  • Steven Winter Associates (New York City)
    • Deep Savings Award for New Construction. The winning project, at VIP Hughes Gardens, achieved 32 percent energy savings.
    • Installer Award for New Construction. Steven Winter Associates achieved a savings of 13,498 million BTU across its MPP portfolio.
  • SustainAbility Partners, LLC (New York City)
    • Customer Satisfaction Award, measured by the highest overall customer satisfaction score from MPP’s customer feedback survey.

The objective of each multifamily building project participating in MPP is to maximize energy efficiency to lower energy costs while improving the health and comfort of residents. Through the Multifamily Energy Performance Portfolio, owners, condo/co-op boards and developers have access to technical assistance, funding and low-cost financing from NYSERDA to implement energy-efficiency measures.
