3 New York Residents Recognized for Outstanding Service on Behalf of Low-Income Energy Customers

Public Service Commission and NYSERDA Present Awards at Annual Low-Income Forum on Energy

The New York State Public Service Commission (Commission) and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) presented achievement awards this week to three New York residents for outstanding commitment to serving low-income energy consumers.

The awards were announced at the 2012 Low-Income Forum on Energy (LIFE) Statewide Conference, an annual conference for individuals at the state, county and local levels who provide services to low-income residents.

  • This year’s LIFE Achievement Award winners, nominated by their peers across the state, are: Dianna Schooley of Ithaca, Tompkins County Office for the Aging, who has been called an “unsung hero” for her 20 plus years of caring interactions with people, her skills at resolving conflict and her expertise in helping low-income seniors find energy-saving solutions.
  • Kate Granger of Baldwinsville, National Grid, known as the “advocate for advocates,” who has worked for over 20 years to find solutions for low-income utility customers that are unable to pay their bills. Of her many contributions, Kate has created a consumer advocacy grass-roots campaign to reach out to special needs customers and collaborated with other organizations to develop a strategy for identifying and reaching out to eligible consumers who never received Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) grants.
  • Andrew Stone of Whitesboro, New York State Weatherization Directors Association, who has worked in the low-income energy field for more than 25 years. Throughout his career Andrew has been a leader across the state and nation in the field of weatherization and has worked with agencies and local power utilities to bring a number of programs to low-income energy consumers across the state.

As household energy burdens rise, an increasing number of New Yorkers find themselves in need of assistance to meet their energy requirements.

“The individuals singled out today represent the critical communication path that community leaders provide in sharing essential information that can help low-income New Yorkers maintain their utility service during these economically challenging times,” said Commission Chairman Garry Brown.

“These individuals demonstrate exceptional commitment to addressing the challenges and opportunities facing low-income New Yorkers as they seek safe, affordable and reliable energy,” said Francis J. Murray, President and CEO of NYSERDA. “While NYSERDA and other government and private organizations provide programs to address energy affordability and efficiency for low-income residents, individuals like those receiving these awards play an instrumental role by bringing this information to the communities and individuals in need.”

The LIFE program is sponsored by the PSC in cooperation NYSERDA to encourage an interactive exchange of information and collaboration among those involved in assisting low-income energy customers.
