NYSERDA Program Recognizes New Buffalo Impact for Helping Low-Income Households Reduce Electricity Bills, Increase Heating System Energy Efficiency

TONAWANDA — The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has recognized New Buffalo Impact of Tonawanda as the EmPower New York “Contractor of the Year.” EmPower New York is a program that helps low-income households reduce their use of electricity, improve the efficiency of their heating systems and increase the comfort of their homes

Brian Paterson, Vice President of New Buffalo Impact accepted the award on behalf of the not-for-profit agency for increasing production capability to assist more families while maintaining a high level of quality, responding quickly to emergency situations and providing the program with highly professional and well-executed energy efficiency work.
NYSERDA also recognized New Buffalo Impact as an industry leader that – in addition to serving residents through EmPower New York – also provides services through NYSERDA's Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program and as a temporary sub-grantee for the Weatherization Assistance Program.
The company is partnering with NYSERDA, the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo and other organizations in the Green and Healthy Homes Initiative, working with other contractors in the Buffalo region to develop an aggregation strategy to deliver energy efficiency services under the Green Jobs – Green NY program, and running a training center for new contractors.
More than 100 contractors participate in EmPower New York. To determine award winners, EmPower staff rated them by quality assurance scores, average completion time and percentage, work volume, and overall commitment to the program. Contractors receiving “Outstanding Contractor” awards are:

- Energy Saving Solutions, Cheektowaga
- Wise Home Energy, Rochester
In addition, Warren-Hamilton Action Committee for Economic Opportunity was recognized for its five years of serving low-income households through EmPower New York.
EmPower New York services are free to income-eligible households, and anyone eligible for HEAP (earning 60 percent of the state median household income) is eligible for EmPower. Services include high-efficiency lighting and replacement of inefficient refrigerators and freezers with new ENERGY STAR qualified models; heating efficiency services, such as insulation and air sealing; and health and safety testing to ensure the home is properly ventilated and gases are not escaping into the living space.
