The Malta facility, fully titled, Training and Education Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing and Alternative and Renewable Technologies was awarded the certification from the Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Development program of the United States Green Building Council.

Hudson Valley President Andrew Matonak announced the honor at TEC-SMART’s Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 10.

"The facility meets the standards for the lowest operating costs, greatest reduction in waste sent to landfills and in harmful greenhouse gas emissions, exceptional conservation of energy and water, and the highest indoor air quality, according to a statement from the organization.

A lot of the material used to build the facility is local and/or recycled from other building projects, and it relies heavily on natural lighting. TEC-SMART is a joint effort between the college and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. It was designed by the New York City-based architecture firm of Perkins+Will and constructed by LeChase Construction.

TEC-SMART features more than a dozen classrooms and laboratories used to train the workforce in semiconductor manufacturing and green technologies.

"We recognize that it is only fitting that a facility that focuses on sustainable energies should boast the highest LEED certification. That has been our goal with TEC-SMART from the beginning and we are indeed proud to have attained it," said Matonak. measures and recognizes performance in key areas, such as sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selections, and indoor environmental quality. Participation and earning certification in LEED has both environmental and financial benefits.

Hudson Valley is one of only seven community colleges in the country, the first community college in New York state, and one of only four colleges in the state to achieve Platinum certification

"NYSERDA commends TEC-SMART on its Platinum LEED certification. Once again, TEC-SMART is leading by example with this certification as it teaches the next generation about clean energy and energy efficiency," said Francis Murray, president and chief executive officer of NYSERDA.
