NYSERDA Sponsored Workshops Help Capital Region Residential Contractors Grow Business

Local Contractor to be recognized by U.S. EPA and U.S. DOE for accomplishments in Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Program

June 15, 2011

ALBANY, NY — To help residential building contractors improve their business models and boost profitability during this slow economy, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is sponsoring a two-day workshop with the Building Performance Institute Inc. (BPI) to include panels of successful contractors who expanded their business by participating in the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR (HPwES) Program.

The workshop will be held June 23-24 at the Holiday Inn, 205 Wolf Road, Albany.

At the workshop, NYSERDA also will present Standard Insulating Co., Inc. of Clifton Park with a 2010 Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Century Club Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy. This award recognizes contractors who have improved the efficiency of more than 100 homes through HPwES in 2010.

Targeted to contractors focused on residential and small commercial remodeling/replacement, the “New York Contractor Exchange: Grow Your Business in a Difficult Market” workshop includes panel presentations by contractors and energy efficiency experts who have successfully incorporated energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives into traditional contracting business models. Panel discussions will cover leveraging federal, state and utility-sponsored incentive programs aimed at green collar workforce development.

Contractors say that using HPwES, a program accessed through NYSERDA, has helped them address customers' unmet needs, boost customer loyalty and increase their revenue.

HPwES employs a ‘house-as-a-system’ philosophy to improving a home's efficiency by up to 40 percent. It uses participating contractors accredited by BPI to deliver the next generation of energy-efficient services to homes. Participating contractors can provide New Yorkers with access to free or reduced-cost comprehensive home energy assessments, home improvement services and low-interest financing. Contractors can also take advantage of training. Financing, energy audits, and workforce development opportunities are made available through the Green Jobs-Green NY Act of 2009.
