NYSERDA Northeast Parent Child Society Workforce Training Prepare Students Green Jobs
Schenectady, NY — The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) today announced that it is providing $125,000 to Northeast Parent & Child Society to support a workforce development program that will prepare students for green jobs opportunities in New York's clean energy economy.
The announcement was made at the opening of Northeast Parent & Child Society’s new Career Development Center, a state-of-the-art workspace that offers training programs and job placement assistance in the field of energy efficiency for youth ages 18-24 in Schenectady County. NYSERDA funding will leverage nearly $58,000 in private investment from Northeast Parent & Child Society.
Northeast Parent & Child Society was selected by NYSERDA as part of a $5.4 million Workforce Development Program (PON 1816) for energy efficiency job training statewide. This funding will foster career pathways in the energy efficiency and clean energy sectors by supporting basic skills training courses, hands-on internship programs with energy efficiency companies, train-the-trainer sessions and further technical training in energy efficiency.

Murray Jr., President and CEO of NYSERDA. “The funding announced today will help facilitate green-jobs opportunities throughout the Capital Region as we work to meet Governor Cuomo’s ambitious energy and environmental goals.”

Northeast Parent & Child Society will recruit 25 students to participate in a 120-hour basic skills training program for work in residential and commercial energy efficiency. Training modules consist of math for construction, building fundamentals, the consumer's role in the green economy, and customer service and work readiness skills.
Following this training program, 20 students will participate in a six-week, full-time paid internship program with Capital Region businesses specializing in energy efficiency. Potential employers include energy service companies in the commercial and industrial energy efficiency sector and companies who perform residential energy audits and retrofits for homeowners through NYSERDA's Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Program.
Since 2006, NYSERDA has provided $23 million in funding to train more than 13,000 New Yorkers for jobs across the clean energy spectrum, including residential and multifamily energy efficiency, commercial and industrial energy efficiency and renewable energy, such as solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, geothermal, onsite and utility-scale wind, and other clean technologies.
This funding also has helped to create a network of more than 40 clean energy training facilities across New York State. These facilities, which include Hudson Valley Community College’s TEC-SMART facility at NYSERDA's Saratoga Technology + Energy Park® in Malta, are located at SUNY community college campuses, union training facilities, BOCES and other sites.
