38-Year-Old Baldwinsville Family Business Recognized by NYSERDA for Driving Sales of Energy-Efficient Appliances

Sheehan’s Appliance Named New York Energy SmartSM January ‘Partner of the Month’

January 19, 2011

BALDWINSVILLE, NY — The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has named Sheehan’s Appliance in Baldwinsville its New York Energy SmartSM “Partner of the Month” for January, recognizing the retailer’s active participation in promoting ENERGY STAR® appliances that help area residents improve energy efficiency in their homes and businesses.

Through the use of NYSERDA’s New York Energy Smart Products Program market share and advertising incentives during 2010, Sheehan’s saw an overall increase in sales of 40 percent compared to 2009 for the same period.

Partner of the Month showcases retail and manufacturing partners who participate in the New York Energy Smart Products Program, an incentive program to stimulate the supply of, and demand for, energy-efficient ENERGY STAR products in New York State in order to reduce energy consumption.

“Sheehan’s is an excellent example of a retailer that is helping New Yorkers choose clean and efficient energy as part of their everyday lives,” said Francis J. Murray Jr., President and CEO, NYSERDA. “We are proud to partner with this long-time family business to help us meet our energy efficiency goals and build our clean energy economy.”

Sheehan’s, co-owned and managed by husband and wife team Blake Anne and Chris Sheehan since 1997, was started by Chris’s parents in 1972.

Sheehan’s Appliance joined the NYSERDA New York Energy Smart Products Program soon after the program was created in 1999. NYSERDA advertising incentives help the retailer promote its ENERGY STAR-qualified products. Sheehan is using the incentives for a regular monthly insert in the local newspaper, a twice-a-year mailer announcing a special one-day sale, promotional radio spots, and – most recently – a special TV promotion.

“We showcased our line of ENERGY STAR refrigerators and clothes washers,” said Ms. Sheehan. “The spot ran a few times every week for six months, and we were pleasantly surprised by the response. We saw much more foot traffic and a lot of new customers told us they didn’t even know our store existed until they saw the spot. It really helped a lot with sales, especially the way the economy has been over the last year. It was a great success and we hope to do another TV spot soon.”

“We think the NYSERDA program is great,” she added. “We believe in energy efficiency, so we really get behind the program and take advantage of it to promote ENERGY STAR.”

The New York Energy Smart Products Program is available to retailers and manufacturers in areas of the state serve by one of New York’s investor-owned utilities: Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation; Consolidated Edison of New York, Inc.; National Grid; New York State Electric & Gas Corporation; Rochester Gas & Electric Corporation; and Orange & Rockland Utilities, Inc.
The program currently partners with more than 1,300 retailers and 45 manufacturers of energy-efficient ENERGY STAR products, such appliances, room air conditioners, lighting, electronics and more. NYSERDA helps retailers build demand for Energy Smart products by providing staff training, point-of-purchase materials for stores, financial assistance with marketing and promotional efforts, and co-operative advertising. Retailers are required to sell one qualified product, provide monthly sales data, and sign a partnership agreement.

Similarly, manufacturers are provided financial assistance for co-operative advertising and assistance in getting products to retail partners through product discounts. Manufacturing partners must manufacturer one qualified product, provide quarterly shipping data, and sign a partnership agreement.

The New York Energy Smart Products Program began in 1999 with the primary goal of increasing the awareness and market share of ENERGY STAR appliances (dishwashers, clothes washers, refrigerators, and room air conditioners). Over the years, the program added lighting, electronics, HVAC, and power management products and began provide assistance to other residential energy efficiency programs, such as the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR Program, the New York ENERGY STAR Homes Program, the EmPower New York Program, and the Multifamily Performance Program.
