Director – NY-Sun – Albany or New York City Office

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is seeking a Director of NY-Sun, a high-priority initiative to drive the growth of the solar industry and the use of solar energy in New York. The Director will lead NYSERDA in conceptualizing, driving, and implementing NY-Sun - building a portfolio of solutions to encourage and enable customers and partners to invest in solar energy and accelerating New York's progress toward a self-sustaining market. Key responsibilities include:

Strategic Leadership and Program Development

  • Manage NYSERDA staff, resources, and associated solar initiatives - knitting together and building on a range of underway initiatives (e.g. incentive programs, balance-of-systems cost reduction, standardized permitting, workforce development) to achieve a unified set of goals
  • Work with colleagues, partners, and customers to identify opportunities to establish and evolve solutions that overcome market barriers, animate the market, encourage private investment, and increase the scale and penetration of PV in New York
  • Spur demand through solutions that aggressively seek to lower soft costs and reduce friction in the market
  • Influence policy, regulations and codes at a statewide level that can enable and accelerate adoption of PV
  • Leverage the full portfolio of NYSERDA programs to achieve NY-Sun's goals (e.g. integrating PV into energy efficiency building projects)
  • Maintain and leverage a network of stakeholders, market participants, peer program administrators, policy experts and other sources of insight to develop a useful collaboration, inform design, and enable improvement of NYSERDA's solutions

Execution and Ongoing Improvement

  • Evolve programs (incentive levels, operations, marketing, ancillary programs) to optimize impact and efficiency based on market insights, critical program and market data, and timely evaluation
  • Ensure programs are built such that they: achieve intended outcomes, are easy-to-use and responsive to customers and partners, maintain operational flexibility needed to evolve, and minimize administrative cost and unnecessary burdens
  • Direct market analysis on technology developments, advancements in codes, cost trends, labor and workforce assets, and other relevant market information to inform effective program delivery
  • Manage financial, staff and contractor resources for efficiency and effectiveness
  • Manage regulatory filings and relevant reporting requirements

People Leadership and Development

  • Lead and manage the NY-Sun team at NYSERDA, develop and build a high-performing team
  • Foster and contribute to a culture of excellence grounded in people development, learning, problem solving, and teamwork
  • Develop staff and colleagues to meet the NYSERDA's goals and their own professional goals, serve as a mentor and a role model
  • Serve as a thought leader within NYSERDA, stay current with developments in solar technologies, federal tax incentives, project development, and project finance trends
  • Build multidisciplinary networks within NYSERDA, NY State's Green Bank, sister and oversight agencies, and the Governor's office to advance NY-Sun's goals

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of relevant experience with a demonstrated record of success in setting strategy and successfully delivering services at scale within business, non-profit, or government operating environments
  • Exceptional knowledge of and insight into the clean energy and solar energy domain; an advanced understanding of market actor, economics, and impediments
  • Demonstrated skill in gaining and using insight from markets actors (e.g. producers, installers, financiers, end-customers, regulators, etc.) to formulate strategy, design solutions, and evolve programs
  • A track record in leading and motivating teams to achieve their potential, innovate and look at a business in new ways, and provide exceptional service delivery
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability; an entrepreneurial edge, resourcefulness, adaptability, and an instinct for surfacing value and pragmatic solutions
  • A strong team-builder with an ability to build productive relationships across a diverse organization
  • Skill in managing multiple diverse activities simultaneously, delivering on commitments, and operating with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment
  • A willingness to work diligently to master knowledge required to perform work effectively and to gain the credibility of colleagues
  • A track record as an exceptional manager, coach, mentor, and developer of talent
