Work History

Joseph Martens is the Commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

From 1998 through 2010, Mr. Martens served as president of the Open Space Institute, directing and overseeing land acquisition, sustainable development, historic preservation and farmland protection. Previously, he served as deputy secretary to the Governor for Energy and the Environment from 1992 to 1994 and Assistant Secretary from 1990 to 1992.

Nonprofit Boards

Mr. Martens is a member of the Board of the Olympic Regional Development Authority and chair of the Adirondack Lake Survey Corporation.

Education

Mr. Martens studied resource economics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and received a master’s degree in resource management from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
